The Sacred Whore

On a personal and collective level, gay sex is central to the dialectic between sex and spirit because it is openly expressed as identity: a social construction. Our sexuality is more than a biological imperative. Making a stand for our eroticism is an act of reclaiming wholeness, bringing our personal shadows into acceptance. This is spirituality.

Early on, our world’s perceptions of us and projections about our desires separate our innate, creative, erotic forces from our spiritual yearnings toward existential meaning. A burden of judgment crushes us, leaving many of us without a framework through which to experience our eroticism in a context of spirituality. On top of that, many of us have suffered a tremendous amount of spiritual abuse at the hands of family, culture, and organized religion. Many gay men don’t know where to turn in order to experience a sense of deep connection, personal inquiry, or purpose in gay sexuality. The pain is felt deeply across our communities and permeates our lives at every level.

The Sacred Whore is an invitation to descend into our personal and collective shadows. It is an exploration of gay shadow and light, themes that connect us as a gay tribe to our most impassioned thrills as well as our aching sorrows. It is ritual space in which to witness and exonerate our disavowed emotions—motivations that, despite our best efforts to extinguish, float freely through our unconscious minds right into the midst of our fucking. Sex is an arena that bears the marks of our division, and we are all immersed in the world’s projections about sex and redemption, our collective realms of sexuality and healing. 

We invite you to trust your innermost truths, to honor your own boundaries, to create boldly with us, and to seek out the much needed containers of safety, vulnerability, and support. The Sacred Whore is a binding ritual to assist men in the process of piecing together their fragmented lives.
